< Our Trip to Jurong Lake Park ><13/7/09>

PART A
A brief introduction of Jurong Lake & Jurong Lake Park

Jurong Lake is a freshwater lake and reservoir. The lake serves as a reservoir contributing to the water supply of the country. It lies next to the Lakeside MRT Station, which derived its name from this geographical feature. The lake is surrounded by parkland, which serves as a recreational ground for nearby residents in Jurong East and Jurong West New Towns.
A landscaped sanctuary called Jurong Lake Park was built around the perimeter of the lake and work was completed in January 2006. Also, a 2.8 kilometre water promenade along Jurong Lake Park would allow residents to participate in watersports. "The park is in fact quite unique. It has a 2.8-kilometre long waterfront promenade. Just take a walk or jog along the promenade and you can take in lovely scenes of the Chinese and Japanese Gardens. JTC has also taken great care to conserve many of the old trees and some of the mangroves to retain the original feel of the place. At the same time, it has added in new varieties of tropical plants and scrubs to further enhance the landscaping." said by Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam
This Is Our Reflection of our trip to Jurong Lake Park

HELLO EVERYONE!About the trip to Jurong Lake Park, we were supposed to research on bridge communities and we managed to find some specimens but there were not many organisms around the bridges so we did not manage to get many photos(so sad!), even if so, the organisms were mostly moving too fast, too small or they camouflage with their environments so, unfortunately, they were unable to be captured on camera. On the trip, we had plenty of fun and we also had a chance to experience the great outdoors and its wonders, like the flora and fauna around the park. We also had a hands on experience searching for organisms around different areas of the parks. For example, around bridges, the animals and plants usually grow and live in groups and the roots also grow towards the water in the drains under the bridges, some roots of the trees were even strong enough to break though the concrete drains to absorb water from the drain. Unfortunately, there were huge amounts of rubbish in the drains and all around the park. That totally destroyed the calm and beautiful environment of Jurong Lake Park. One of the most interesting discoveries was under a pile of damp leaves, we found a colony of worms that were only a bit thicker than a strand of hair and only less than 1 cm long, thus we had difficulties to capture them on camera too. We took a video but is not that clear. What a pity! Overall, The trip was fun and at the same time inspiring!

Photobucket
There is an insect found on the ground. The one which is in the red circle.
Photobucket Photobucket
Pictures of eggs.It the apple snail eggs. They either can be pinkish red or yellow.(Wow!)Apple snails inhabit a wide range of ecosystems from swamps, ditches and ponds to lakes and rivers. Not every species has similar preferences. However, most apple snails prefer lentic waters above turbulent water (rivers). It is a species called Pomacea canaliculata. For more infomation about apple snail, please ♥click here♥

This is a photo of an insect taken from Guoyi's collar. There was an insect climbing on Guoyi's collar :D

There is a white insect on the leaf, can you see the white insect?
Photobucket
There is a lot of red ants on the rock. So sad, we only caught a blur view of them.
Photobucket
Someone is holding on to a cute, little lizard. How I pity it...

We took a video some damp leaves, under them are a colony of worms that were only a bit thicker than a strand of hair and only less than 1 cm long, so it is not shown very clearly in the video. As the photographer was a kind of scared, so it is a bit confusing. You could pause at some parts to see more clearly. Sorry for the inconvenience caused.
Photobucket
This is a photo of a lizard. It moves very fast, with just less than 1 second it could just crawl the the other end of the road.

Photobucket
This is a photo of a komodo dragon, we cannot go too near to the komodo dragon, so from the photo you cannot see very clearly, u only can see the head part.
Photobucket
This is the home of the komodo dragon which you see in the previous picture.
Photobucket
This is a 'house' built by ants. Although they are small in size, their perserverance and cooperation is much better than us. ( Good example!)

Here's another movie :D Enjoy! Although it is still not very clear, but it is better than the previous one. This video shows red ants carrying a dead termite (white) home.:D They never give up :P -

Pollution we found in Jurong Lake Park Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket
All of the photos are taken from Jurong Lake Park. This are all pollution spotted by our group. Rubbish that are commonly spotted are plastic bags, plastic bottles, beer cans, soft drinks bottles, paper bags and some leaves dropped down from trees. But most of the rubbish are thrown away by inconsiderate people. Jurong Lake Park had so many of dustbin and those inconderate people just threw it on the ground or throw anywhere they like. This is a very bad example.
Photobucket
This is a photo looks like there is a red flower blooming, but if you look carefully, it is actually a red plastic bag thrown on the plant by others.
Photobucket
This is a photo of a pool of stagnant water. Isn't it dangerous?
Photobucket
This is a photo of inconsiderate people drawing on the skating wall.
Photobucket
This is a very special discovery! This is a litter! And the litter is a sock!

Part C: "Specialty" Community

The organisms living around the bridge usually live under it but there are not many plants and organisms because the water in the drains under the bridges are not clean so the plants do not usually take in the water and animals also cannot drink the water.

PART D

Human have caused an impact by throwing rubbish into the rivers, drains and pavements. Rubbish commonly spotted is plastic bags, plastic bottles, beer cans and soft drinks bottles. This rubbish is thrown by inconsiderate people. This is not a good example. If people keep throwing rubbish into rivers, drains, the fishes living there will dead due to the lack of oxygen.

PART E
The authorities or park management officials at Jurong Lake Park have set up fines and recycling bins for people to throw their waste into the bins. They have set up bins for recycling paper, plastic.I think that it is because they do not want people to throw materials which can be recycled to the rubbish bins ,so as to save the natural environment. We could recycle, reuse and reduce. The authorities are doing their part to safeguard the environment as they designed notices to convince people not to litter.I think that the efforts are effective because when adults see the notice boards, they will throw their waste materials into the provided bins and their children will follow what their parents are doing.
